What is the conga cubana? The conga is a popular Cuban dance of African origin that has a syncopated rhythm and is accompanied by drums. It serves as accompaniment for carnival parades (comparsas) and originated in the festivities held by enslaved Black people. One of its main characteristics is the use of the “corneta china,” a wind instrument originally from China that was adopted into traditional Cuban music. It was brought by Chinese immigrants to Cuba. During Yuriko's travels to Cuba, she encountered this very lively rhythm, and when she heard the sound of the “corneta china” it reminded her a lot of the sound of the mizmar, a wind instrument used in Saidi dances from Egypt. ** Dive into the energy of Cuban conga—a vibrant, rhythm-driven dance rooted in Afro-Cuban carnival traditions. In this class, you’ll learn fun choreography while exploring musicality, its particular grounded movement and the communal spirit of conga.
